Pop!

Hello

This one is about my design called Pop!

I wanted to make a polka dot pattern but do something more interesting than plain spots. I briefly thought of doing planets, and adding rockets. Then about moons, with faces. But very soon I settled on bubbles being the fun circular things I’d play around with, and almost straightaway I decided they wouldn’t be spaced out regularly, instead they’d float haphazardly about like bubbles do, and inside them I’d put little people.

Little people in their own little zones is one of my things. It’s because that’s what I do, I like to escape to a private spot to write or paint. I like solitude. So a bubble feels like a good place to stick a person, and then I think about what they might do in there - maybe read a book? Maybe drink some wine? Maybe feed a mouse? Maybe just sit and stare?

This was during those lockdowns in 2019 or 2020, so people being in bubbles felt realistic. That kissing couple, each in their own bubble, trying to get through to each other - that was life for many many people.

And where you have bubbles, you have popping bubbles. It’s a simple pattern, but there are fun things happening in it. Much better than a plain polka dot pattern

The colours that I think work best with Pop! Are blue and pink. I gravitate towards greens and blues as background colours, but the pink works well here. And pink is a soapy colour. I think of the pinkishness of light on a soap bubble.
